The various Wheaties panels issues are among the most underrated "cards" in the hobby likely due to the fact that an inability to have the large panels graded reduces interest among those collectors interested in registries and such. Add to this the fact that the hand-cut nature of the cards makes condition assessment difficult and the cards have never really found a home among collectors. One collector however has found a brilliant way of accentuating the beauty of the panels while displaying them in an extremely appealing and dynamic way: this matted and framed display includes a complete set of 1939 Wheaties Series 12 panels with nine striking art deco panels depicting nine different players: Lefty Gomez (HOF) Bill Lee Joe Medwick (HOF) Mel Ott (HOF) Jimmie Foxx (HOF) Johnny Allen Ernie Lombardi (HOF) Hank Greenberg (HOF) and Arky Vaughan (HOF). The piece is sizeable: the finished framed size is 31" x 33" with significant girth. The resulting display quality however is impressive. Where Wheaties panels have in the past been restricted to the backs of binders due to the inability to effectively store them without risking damage in this case they have been brought to the forefront in a tremendous display. Colorful blues and oranges jump out of the frame inviting the viewer to read the extensive copy that comes on each panel. Condition-wise the various panels appear excellent though several exhibit small vintage hole punches likely the result of long-ago binder storage. A visible crease can be seen along the left of the Lee panel with minor blemishes to the upper-left of the Lombardi. Obviously the frame prevents us from examining the edges or reverse of any of the pieces. Still a wonderful display with nine panels total a complete Series 12 set of 1939 Wheaties panels.
