Exceptional trolley car sign dating roughly to 1920 promoting "Silver Top Beer." The Independent Brewing Company was a conglomerate formed in 1905 by the merger of fifteen of Pennsylvania's 58 breweries with the fifteen breweries primarily surrounding Pittsburgh. After Prohibition the company changed its name to the Duquesne Brewery a company which remained in business until 1972 (the brand name has recently been revived). The Silver Top lager brand continued to be brewed until the company's 1972 dissolution. The Independent Brewing Company produced three baseball-themed cardboard trolley signs none of which were "official" player-endorsed pieces. This example however is clearly designed to resemble Pittsburgh superstar Honus Wagner; a semi-bowlegged stance and large forearms imply Wagner as much as the "P" on his cap. With illustration credit given to Maynard J. Williamson a Pittsburgh-area architect in the late teens and early 20s it is likely that the sign dates to roughly that same period. Appears in EX condition with a few light creases though the matting and frame (to a finished size of 23" x 13 1/2" prevent us from examining the edges and reverse.
