Spectacularly sharp example of Honus Wagner's E98 card part of the remarkable 2012 "Black Swamp" discovery of E98 cards found in an attic in Defiance Ohio. Nearly 700 cards were part of the find discovered in a cardboard box under an old dollhouse in an attic. The E98 cards which were produced by an unknown manufacturer (though speculation is now that the cards may have been issued by the Defiance Candy Company) and have always been considered somewhat scarce. In fact the find nearly doubled the population of cards from the issue graded by PSA. After some consideration PSA wisely elected to give cards from the "Black Swamp" find their own designation in the company's population reports which helps us to identify the true scarcity of the cards as well as to identify how the find impacted the overall population of cards. It also helped maintain the integrity of the original population leaving cards from the find almost treated as a separate set a virtually uncirculated group of cards similar to the Tango Eggs cards of 1915. Wagner cards from the find were evenly distributed between red background and green background versions; despite the large number of cards in the find just nine green background examples have graded higher than NM 7. This example is sharp and clean a very slight centering issue and minor corner touches keeping the card from a higher holder but making it no less desirable. The hobby has absorbed the Black Swamp cards well enough that just two Wagners have sold below the grade of MINT 9 since January of 2018. A rare and valuable card of one of the hobby's most beloved subjects.
