1955 letter from Happy Chandler to Clark Griffith Hall of Famer and then owner of the Washington Senators. Chandler writes to thank Griffith of his message of congratulations. Chandler in 1955 won a second term as Governor of Kentucky (his first term ran from 1935 to 1939). In 1939 Chandler became a United States Senator a position he held until succeeding Judge Landis as commissioner of baseball in 1945. Chandler was best known as the man who approved Jackie Robinson's contract with the Dodgers as well as the man who created the first pension fund for ballplayers. Baseball owners however were not as fond as Chandler and they did not invite him back for a second term as commissioner. It is under that backdrop that the letter's content is given much more depth. It reads as follows: My dear Mr. Griffith: Mrs. Chandler and I have just returned from a much needed rest after the campaign and find before me your fine message of congratulations. I shall never forget my real friends in Baseball. Hoping to see you before too much time goes by and with assurances of my warmest esteem I am as always Cordially yours Happy An outstanding letter and while Chandler signatures are not uncommon signatures simply written "Happy" with such a thoughtful message behind them are far more desirable. LOA from James Spence Authentication.
