Extremely rare card type that until recently was thought to be a complete set of 12 cards of New York Giants players issued in 1909 on packages of Derby Cigars. A recent find of 12 Philadelphia Athletics players sheds more light on the issue as the cards were found in two-card panels each hand-cut from a package of some sort. The Athletics cards due to their player assortment could have dated to 1913 or 1914. When considered a set along with the Giants players however 1913 was the only possible season all 24 players were with their respective teams - and the two teams met for the 1913 World Series. As such it is logical to conclude that this is actually a 24-card set issued in 1913 to commemorate the World Series. The fact that it took a century to discover the 12 Philadelphia A's cards is a testament to the rarity of the issue. This example depicting Giants shortstop Art Fletcher has been graded AUTHENTIC by SGC due to its hand-cut nature. The card does exhibit some mild creasing across the top third of the card along with some mild water staining at the top and what appears to have been some erased writing on the lower border. Still the overall presentation of the card is strong. The issue is rare enough that only the most advanced type card collection contain an example from this issue one of the tougher and more highly prized of its era.
