Beautiful example of Spalding's "Improved Score Card " a double-sided scorecard printed on heavy stock measuring just shy of 7" x 5 1/2". Meticulously scored in pencil the game in question dates a March 26 1937 game between the Yankees and their minor league franchise the Newark Bears during Spring Training in St. Petersburg Florida. The 1937 Newark Bears are considered by many to be the greatest minor league team of all-time. The team would win 109 games and lose just 43 led by the powerful bats of Babe Dahlgren (.340 batting average) Hall of Famer Joe Gordon (.280 batting average with 26 home runs) and Charlie Keller (.353 batting average). The pitching staff of Joe Beggs (21-4) Atley Donald (19-2) Vito Tamulis (18-6) and Steve Sundra (15-4) were virtually unhittable. Other names of significance who appeared on the team were Jim Gleeson Tommy Henrich Willard Hershberger Frankie Kelleher and Spud Chandler. The 1937 Yankees were of course equally legendary winning 102 games against 52 losses behind Hall of Fame manager Joe McCarthy and going on to defeat the Giants in the World Series. Hall of Famers on the team included Bill Dickey Lou Gehrig Tony Lazzeri Joe DiMaggio Red Ruffing and Lefty Gomez. The game in question was started by Spud Chandler for the Yankees and included their regular starting lineup (Crosetti hitting leadoff DiMaggio Gehrig and Dickey in the 3-4-5 holes). Clearly more than just an exhibition the Yankees took the competition seriously. An outstanding scorecard and document of two of the great teams of the 1930s head-to-head.
