L.L. Rittgers is an artist who produced comical statuettes many with sports themes between the late 1930s and the 1950s. The pieces were made of chalkware and each were signed and dated by the artist. The popular baseball pieces featured a batter pitcher and umpire made to look as if the batter and pitcher are glaring at the umpire with menacing expressions. The original chalkware pieces are scarce and desirable today. Some years later replicas of the statues manufactured in Japan became available. Not constructed from chalkware those pieces were obviously unsigned by the artist. Oddly enough the replicas are also somewhat scarce and have become almost as valuable as the originals. Presented here is a full set of such replicas in excellent condition with very little wear. An unusual display three highly collectible figural pieces.
