Stunning cabinet photo featuring the dominant 1885 Chicago White Stockings who finished the 1885 season with an astonishing 87-25 record behind the play of Cap Anson and King Kelly along with Piano Legs Gore John Clarkson Silver Flint Billy Sunday and more. Measuring 12" x 10" including the mount this 8 1/2" x 6 3/4" photo is clear and crisp the photo itself moderately soiled but otherwise presenting extremely well. The mount as was its intent has absorbed the bulk of the wear over the years resulting in paper loss and severe rounding at the corners as well as a slight tear at the upper left edge. None of this wear or damage impacts the photo itself. The subjects in the photo reads like a Who's Who in 19th Century baseball: FRONT ROW L-R: Ned Williamson Abner Dalrymple Thomas Burns John Clarkson (HOF) and Billy Sunday; BACK ROW L-R: Piano Legs Gore Silver Flint Cap Anson (HOF) Jim McCormick King Kelly (HOF) and Fred Pfeffer. Also included with the photo are examples of various places where this very familiar photo has been used: An 1885 Harper's Weekly woodcut (a trimmed example of which sold for $480 by itself in our Spring auction) as well as pages from Spink Sport Stories and America's National Game. A seldom-seen but very important original photograph depicting one of the game's great early teams with three Hall of Famers and several other players who ranked among the greatest of their era.
