Tremendous 6 3/4" x 10 3/4" original photo of Babe Ruth along with "Mrs. Babe Ruth" and Mr. William McCarthy then-president of the Pacific Coast League taken according to typewritten notations on the reverse after the Ruths arrived in San Francisco in the winter of 1919. The then Red Sox star played barnstorming games in California that fall and then stayed in San Francisco and Los Angeles for the winter. From our research the photo was taken in late October of 1919 as Ruth embroiled himself in a month of "will he or won't he" drama surrounding his contract with the Red Sox and whether he would return to baseball at all. Articles in California appeared stating that Ruth would be entering the cigar business then the movie business in favor of baseball - and then in late November he sent his personal secretary back to Boston to deal with his affairs. After New Years it was announced that his contract had been sold to the New York Yankees and within a month (with some mild salary negotiation thrown in) Ruth was in Florida about to become the most important baseball player who would ever live. This photo though picturing Ruth in street clothes is one of the last photos picturing Ruth while a member of the Boston Red Sox. Clean and crisp the photo does suffer from some corner clips and associated edge wear along with some modest surface wrinkling none of which impacts the image quality. In addition to the aforementioned typewritten notes the photo does carry the Christie's Baseball Magazine hologram in the lower-left corner. A tremendous historically significant photo.
