I have one to sell!
As we're preparing each auction for launch a handful of piece jockey for position in our eyes as favorites. Sometimes they're obvious things and other times less so. For our spring auction this hand-made advertising piece from the Goodyear Tire & Robber Company is one of the dark horse candidates for our favorite. Measuring just about 8 3/4" x 10" the display was produced by the Kalasign Company of Kalamazoo Michigan. Screened by hand onto heavy cardboard the piece advertises Goodyear's "Flexyde" baseballs. Flexide was the name for a rubberized fabric used as a substitute for elastic in belts. The display depicts young people playing a sandlot game one of the youngsters chasing a batted ball. A hole in the display was the likely location for one of the baseballs creating a three-dimensional advertising display. This beautiful display is essentially a four-color silkscreen demonstrating incredible craftsmanship. We have never seen anything like it. Kalasign displays were handmade die-cut pieces with exceptional quality. The piece is in outstanding condition with some chipping at the bottom corners and some paper loss on the reverse where an easel back was likely once affixed. The Kalasigns promotional advertisement and copyright information is clearly illustrated on the reverse. One of the most interesting high-quality baseball-related advertising display items we have ever handled.
