Outstanding minor league document featuring the 1937 Rochester Red Wings. 7" x 5" photo is mounted on a 9 3/4" x 12 1/2" cardboard mount with the players identified underneath the phot and facsimile autographs in the bottom half of the mount. Future Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston is pictured in the front row second from right. Alston broke into the minor leagues with the Huntington Red Birds of the Mid-Atlantic League in 1936. Late that season he was called up and made his major league debut on the last day of the 1936 season filling in for Johnny Mize. That was the last game Alston would ever play in the majors. By 1940 it was clear that his future was in managing and while he did play a few more seasons in the minors he was managing in Brooklyn by 1954. The photo here is in outstanding condition clearly having been preserved in some tuype of scrapbook but also having been protected by the cardboard mount which does exhibit some edge and corner wear some stains along the right edge and some mild corner creases. Two punched holes appear at the top of the page perhaps there since the manufacture of the piece. The reverse is marred by significant glue staining further evidence that scrapbook mounting protected the piece for some time. Quite an exceptional pre-rookie piece featuring the future Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston.
