Like many cigarette manufacturers of the time the S.F. Hess Company of Rochester NY also produced sets of baseball cards and issued them in their cigarette packs. S.F. Hess began issuing the N321 baseball cards in the late summer of 1888 and throughout the fall of the same year with their Creole Cigarettes. The set features 40 California League players printed in brilliant color and was regionally issued in California. As a result of such a limited production time and geographic reach cards from this set are extremely scarce and widely coveted by collectors. This card of Jack Hayes is graded POOR 10 by SGC due to overall wear including some surface abrasions that impact the front of the card. In a card issue like N321 however the main focus is rarity as the cards are simply very difficult to find. Cards in this condition routinely sell into the four-figures simply due to rarity. Finding an original untrimmed example is no easy task.
