Spectacular 1990 National League umpire shirt and cap worn by Eric Gregg. Gregg was nicknamed "The Plump Ump " just the third black umpire in major league history after Emmett Ashford and Art Williams. Gregg was the third base umpire in Game 3 of the 1989 World Series which was postponed due to the earthquake. He worked the plate for two no-hitters and was the home plate umpire for the first night game at Wrigley Field. Gregg topped out at close to 400 pounds but entered a weight loss program at Duke University after the on-field death of umpire John McSherry. Gregg died after complications from a stroke in 2006. Presented here are Gregg's uniform jersey and cap from 1990. The shirt is a Hathaway 7-button shirt Gregg's number 7 stitched onto the right sleeve. Gregg signed the jersey at the left front shirt tail in blue fiber tip marker. The cap is a New Era NL Umpire's cap exhibiting extremely heavy use stained and worn. Gregg signed and inscribed the inside of the cap in blue fiber tip marker. An exceptional piece of modern baseball history the jersey and cap from just the third black umpire in baseball history.
