Exceptional team photo postcard of the 1944 Indianapolis Clowns. A member of the Negro American League from 1943 until 1955 the Clowns were actually the Cincinnati-Indianapolis Clowns for 1944 and 1945. The postcard was once the property of beloved left fielder Henry "Speed" Merchant known for stealing bases and considered by many to be the greatest left fielder in team history. Merchant who we believe to be pictured in the middle row far right signed the postcard "To Bob" at the top marking the team as "CIN & IND CLOWNS" at the bottom border. This is a pretty spectacular postcard also picturing Alex Radcliffe (Back row fourth from left) "Bunny" Downs (Right wearing suit) "King Tut" King (front row left) and Buster Haywood (Back row far left civilian clothes). Significant surface cracking is evident but nothing that interferes with the quality of what is a very sharp image with excellent contrast. The reverse is soiled with some writing in what appears to be graphite pencil. The Indianapolis Clowns continued barnstorming well into the 1980s. This photo documents a relatively early period in team history when they were still an official part of the Negro American League. An outstanding real photo postcard once owned by a player his own handwriting at the top.
