Handwritten letter of agreement written by William Martin founder and manager of the Newport Rhode Island Trojan baseball team. The agreement is between the ballclub and Ty Cobb whereby Cobb and a "pitcher named Glasier" (John Glaiser in his only Major League season) were contracted to play for the Trojan team on Sunday May 23. Cobb would be paid $350 to play first base and Glaiser would be paid $50. The handwritten agreement also called for Cobb's expenses to be covered. Not a bad ringer. Cobb signed the agreement in the alotted space "Tyrus R. Cobb " indicating his agreement. We have sadly been unable to locate any boxscores or news accounts of the exhibition though we do know that Cobb's Tigers had a day off on the 23rd. The letter itself is in fine condition with age-related foxing and some minor stains and some handwritten date notations. The letter has in the past been folded into quarters along with additional wear to the edges notably near the folds and at the very top of the page which appears to have had some exceptional but very minor professional restoration simply to clean up the very top edge of the paper (unrelated to any of the writing signatures or letterhead design). An exceptional letter documenting the major leagues' penchant for playing in exhibition games for extra cash on days off. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
