The 1906 Ullman’s “Art Frame” series of postcards are a rare and valuable set of cards most of which were produced to commemorate the New York Giants’ 1905 World Championship. Each of the cards feature a black and white image inset into a wood-grain “frame.” The Ullman Manufacturing Company of New York began as a publisher of lithograph prints and eventually began producing postcards and greeting cards. Their postcards were known for their excellent quality printing and heavy paper. The Ullman baseball postcards are found with both green and brown-tinted frames. As of today 13 postcards are known but the cards are rare enough that it is considered likely that there are cards in the set that have yet to be discovered. Between the PSA and SGC set registries there is only one complete set of Ullman Postcards registered: this one. In fact 23% of all the graded 1906 Ullman Postcards can be found in the pages of this catalog. An incredible collection of cards virtually impossible to complete we have elected to break the set into individual lots. Easily the key card in the Ullman Postcards issue that of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson. Graded VG 40 by SGC this is one of just 7 graded examples of this rare card. Of those only one other has managed to attain this grade with none higher. The highest-graded example of an Ullman Postcards Christy Mathewson boasting a clean image and wear consistent with the grade. Simply an outstanding rare and extremely desirable postcard easily one of the most important commercially issued baseball postcards.
