Spectacular Sepia-toned photo measuring 9 3/8" x 7 1/2" featuring the Utica "Pent-Ups" of 1878. Many of the players on this team played in the major leagues and are familiar to 19th Century collectors due to their appearance in the N172 and N173 Old Judge issues. An extremely rare CdV of this photo has been sold at auction and the reverse contains advertising that identifies the players. As such the players appear as follows: FRONT ROW (L-R): Hardie Richardson Nick Alcott. MIDDLE ROW (L-R): Charlie Smith John Richmond William Gifford George "Juice" Latham John McGuinness. BACK ROW (L-R): Eddie Kennedy Blondy Purcell Bob Clock Joe Roche. The gorgeous albumen photo taken at the L.C. Mundy Studio in Utica (the same studio credited on the CdV) has been cut down to its frame. The reverse contains the studio's stamp with some pencil writing and long-dried glue stains as well. Clarity is strong vintage baseball equipment plainly visible in the foreground. A remarkable photograph containing many future major leaguers and players included in the N172 Old Judge baseball card issue.
