The N284 Buchner "Gold Coin" card issue is perhaps the most underrated of all the 19th Century issues. Perhaps it is the "generic" player art (the same illustrations are reused from player to player simply recolored to reflect a different uniform) but values on the issue have not kept pace with other mainstream 19th Century sets like Old Judge and Allen & Ginter. What the Buchner issues lack in design however they more than make up for in quality companion pieces. The entirety of the Buchner card issues served as a large redemption offer where any cards packed in Buchner tobacco packages could be accumulated and redeemed for special prizes. Accumulating 75 cards entitled the redeemer to a pocketbook or knife 150 qualified for the beautiful Offenders & Defenders book. Accumulating 250 cards entitled the bearer to a photo album and saving 400 could earn a silk umbrella. The redemption offer for 600 cards however was for a bronze clock nicknamed "One Of The Finest." Presented here is an example of that clock a beautiful bronze figural piece depicting a police officer in uniform (which corresponds of course with the "Offenders and Degenders" theme) with a small but handsome clock set into the base. This is the first such piece we have handled and unquestionably the finest we have seen; it's original bronze finish has not been repainted the clock itself is original as is the officer's nightstick (which is often found broken over time and replaced by creative collectors or restorers). The clock functions though we cannot vouch for its accuracy or longevity nor can we guarantee that components of the motion have not been replaced or restored and thus the buyer should take that into consideration when bidding. This clock is particularly rare with many 19th Century collectors speculating that roughly 100 examples were manufactured with far fewer surviving today. Regardless this is an exceptional piece particularly rare with special significance for 19th Century card collectors. One of the finest companion pieces we have seen.
