Nearly 12" in height beautifully-engraved championship cup presented to the Clarke & Courts team of Galveston TX at an awards ceremony on August 27 1929. Clarke & Courts finished first in the Industrial League led by pitcher Eugene Watts who had the unfortunate nickname of "Chink" and was called a "big Chinaman" in Texas newspapers at the time. Watts played football and baseball and actually played a few seasons of minor league ball compiling a 25-18 record with a gaudy 5.75 earned run average mostly with the Denver Bears of the Western League. Clarke & Courts was a printing and lithography business based in Galveston that remained in business for more than 100 years eventually closing in 1989. Its Galveston headquarters remains standing today in the heart of Galveston's historic district having been converted into condominiums. The cup was manufactured by sporting goods company Draper & Maynard their logo adorns the base. The engraving on the cup reads as follows: "Championship - Industrial League - 1929. Won by Clarke & Courts Base Ball Club - A. Lewis Lopez Mgr." Two figural baseball bats adorn each side of the cup a silver color that has developed a dull patina over the years but is in otherwise excellent condition. A beautiful document of amateur baseball from the dawn of the sport's explosive popularity.
