Though the collection presented here does make itself available at auction from time to time when it was initially consigned to us we had not seen it before. An exquisite package that reads like a "who's who" of early 1960s pro sports the "Manly Arts Course" is a package of materials presented by "The National Sports Council " as a type of correspondence course for physical self-improvement. The amazing 23" x 14" box is quite literally jam packed with material pamphlets brochures and instructions bearing the names of some of the greatest athletes of the era. The hinged inner lid contains a black and white photo of Mickey Mantle Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford with inset photos of Berra Mantle and Joe Louis. The "table of contents" lists a host of "self-improvement lessons" each with its own brochure along with additional guides on physical conditioning self-defense and health & hygeine. Notably included is a spectacular 13 1/2" x 10 3/4" black and white portrait of Mantle printed on heavy board backed with a lesson in Patriotism comparing the United States and Russia. Also included are large prints and guides featuring Joe Louis Paul Giel Yogi Berra Bob Cousy Doak Walker Ted Kluszewski Joe Lapchick George Patterson Billy Graham Whitey Lockman Carmen Basilio Kid Gavilan Willie Pep and many more. Also included is a record album titled "Win Win Win with World Champions." This is simply an incredible piece. The display value of the individual 13 1/2" x 10 3/4" prints could fill a room with gorgeous images alone and all the included literature pamphlets bounceback cards certificates and promotional material are simply wonderful. Though the box lid has seen considerable wear and is repaired in some areas with clear tape it is still intact and the internal components are in excellent condition. One of the most lavish extravagant sports-related pieces we have ever seen.
