The 12-card 1968 Topps 3D set is one of the rarest and most highly sought-after of all postwar vintage card "test" issues. Originally available only in a small number of Brooklyn stores the card design looks similar to the standard 1969 Topps baseball issue (however with the player and team name at the top of the card) with a "three-dimensional" background produced by XOGRAPH. Topps abandoned the idea due to cost though Kelloggs utilized XOGRAPH to produce their 3D cards in the early 1970s. The cards have captured the attention of dedicated collectors of tough card types over the years. This Maloney graded EX 5 by PSA features what is a much tougher variation the "no dugout" variation. The background of the more plentiful Maloney card depicts an image of a dugout as if Maloney were warming up with the dugout in the background. In this variation of the card no dugout is present. Virtually all known copies of the Maloney are of the more plentiful variation. The current graded population of Maloney cards contains just three copies of this variation - two graded by SGC and one by PSA. However you will note that the "No Dugout" variation is not printed on the grading label meaning that at least this copy of the Maloney is not counted in PSA"s population report for the variation. As such we will provide population information for all the Maloney 3D cards noting in this description that the "no dugout" variation appears to be considerably less plentiful than the more common variety.Population Data:PSA Population: 65 total graded 8 at this level 48 higherSGC Population: 17 total graded 2 at this level 10 higher
