William Riddle "Doc" Marshall was a journeyman catcher and outfielder who bounced around between the Phillies Giants Beaneaters Cubs and Dodgers in the span of just five seasons. Marrshall in fact played with three different teams in 1904 (including the Giants twice). A weak hitter he compiled a lifetime batting average of just .210 finishing his brief major league career with Brooklyn in 1909. This card once part of the famed Lionel Carter collection has been graded VG/EX 50 by SGC largely due to wear in the upper-right hand corner that presents itself almost as a corner flip or dog-ear. As with Carter"s other cards however the color and image are crisp and bold. Unlike many other collectors of his era Carter sought out cards of the best possible condition; ones he pulled out of packs beginning in the 1930s were obviously more in his control than those he obtained via purchase and trade over the years particularly because so much of his trading was done with collectors through the mail. The historical significance of this card lies as much in its provenance as it does in the card itself obviously as cards owned by hobby pioneers often command a premium. We have obtained several T206 cards from Carter"s collection and have broken them into individual lots in this auction in hopes that multiple collectors will have an opportunity to win them.
