Spectacular handwritten story by International Boxing Hall of Famer Arthur Donovan a boxing referee and father of football Hall of Famer Art Donovan of the Baltimore Colts. The Donovan family had a long history in boxing as the elder Donovan's father Michael was a referee and boxing trainer and trained Gentleman Jim Corbett for his fight against John Sullivan. At some point the elder Donovan recalled the story his father told him in this letter. It reads as such: Sullivan Corbett Story Dad told me that: John L Sullivan looked over right into my eyes aas he addressed that crowd who had lost fortunes on the outcome of the fight - he made a typically New England speech - patriotic one when he said (illegible) What else could he do. His drink handed Corb the champ on a silver platter. When he passed down the aisle I put my hand out - & he shoved it away! The combo of Mike & Corbett had brought his drunk reign to a close. Three belly punches sealed the verdict; but a Sullivan ten yrs would have meant exit for Corbett if Sullivan had the inclination to stay in the condition Muldoon had laboriously shaped J K up for the Kilrain fight of 1889 when my dad prevented a death in the ring when "Bat" Masterson and he threw in the towel for Jake Ki but later Corbett boxed Kilrain (story). Sullivan trained in the sun. Kilrain indoors. Run-on grammar aside this is an absolutely incredible secondhand account of the aftermath of the fight directly from the son of Corbett's trainer in his own writing. Stapled to the reverse are some related news articles. Given to our consignor directly by Art Donovan LOA from James Spence Authentication.
