Stunning 1887 cabinet featuring a woven silk inset manufactured in the "Stevengraph" process. The Stevengraph company produced a wide variety of woven silk materials near the turn of the century a product of the Stevengraph Company of Coventry England. The company produced colorful pictures woven from silk well into the 1930s but in 1940 the Stevengraph factory was destroyed in a German bombing attack. Today Stevengraphs are highly collectible. Measuring 5 3/8" x 7 1/8" the cabinet pictures a Stevengraph image of champion John L. Sullivan Sullivan defeated Jake Kilrain in 75 rounds (!) in the last bare knuckle boxing championship in 1889. The cabinet itself appears beautiful with very little wear and is encased in a vintage-looking frame that is backed by glass so that the viewer can read the biographical information printed on the reverse. The frame of course prevents us from examining edges and corners but the visible areas of the cabinet present extremely well. Certainly one of the more beautiful boxing cabinets we have encountered.
