The 1948 Leaf boxing set is one of the two post-World War II boxing sets issued by a major gum manufacturer. It consists of 49 different regular issue cards plus the T206 Wagner of boxing the Rocky Graziano. Printing quality is the biggest problem with 1948 Leaf cards. The company was notorious for press mistakes. We are pleased to offer a variety of cards representing the “best” of Leaf’s quality control: Sometimes the fronts are right the backs are right and the cutting is so so wrong. These five cards came from perfectly good sheets but ended up cut so badly that they are missing borders entirely or even showing pieces of other cards on them. Missing borders: Ceferino Garcia Tony Zale Billy Conn. Showing elements of the cards next to them: Jake LaMotta and Sugar Ray Robinson. 1948 Leaf card fronts are colorized black and white images. Flesh tones were created using only red black and blue through a combination of dots with blank areas to generate different flesh tones and solid blue or black (or plain card stock) as background colors. When the printing lines up exactly the result is a crisp sharp image; if any phase misses the mark the entire image is thrown off. The five cards offered here are way off resulting in substantial ghost images floating beside or above or below the main image: Jim Jeffries Max Schmeling Georges Carpentier Tony Christofordis Tommy Loughran.
