Complete set of 1880s Capadura "Segar" baseball trade cards. Issued by R. C. Brown & Co. of New York each of the five trade cards features an "Imperial Segar Manufactory" ad on the reverse touting the Cuban tobacco of Capadura Segars. Each of the five cards features a baseball-related cartoon with a (not so) humorous caption underneath. Trade cards were an effective method of 19th Century advertising as collectors would strive to complete sets and often filled scrapbooks with the colorful lithographic cards. While many Capadura Cigar cards are found with the borders trimmed (as are many other trade cards) these five remain intact in remarkable condition despite their age and the fragile nature of the paper on which they are printed. While each card technically grades F-P due to glue residue on the reverse from scrapbook removal it is precisely that glue that helped maintain these cards in such strong condition for over a century. The primary condition flaws among this group lie on the "Where will you have them?" card on which the number 3 is written in pencil in the upper-right corner. The "Behind the Bat" card has a rubber stamp from the H. A. Brock company on the front as well. Overall however this is an attractive group of scarce and highly collectible trade cards.
