Simple team postcards from the deadball era such as this one often reveal great stories and this one is no exception. Pictured on this postcard are the 1910 Toledo Mud Hens of the American Association. Associated most closely with Hall of Fame Manager Casey Stengel (who played in Toledo from 1926 through 1931) the Mud Hens of 1910 included many players that moved onto the majors. Managed by Ducky Holmes and Harry Hinchman the 1910 Mud Hens included Fred Abbott (who played three seasons with Cleveland and Philadelphia) Jim Baskette (who pitched parts of three seasons with Cleveland) Kid Butler (one season with the Browns) Dave Callahan (parts of two seasons with Cleveland) Bill Essick (parts of two seasons with Cincinnati) Jerry Freeman (two seasons with Washington) Bill Hallman (Four seasons with Milwaukee the White Sox and Pittsburgh) Grover Hartley (14 seasons with the Giants Browns St. Louis Terriers of the Federal League Red Sox and Indians) Charlie Hickman (12 seasons with the Boston Beaneaters the New York Giants Boston Americans Cleveland Bronchos Detroit Tigers Washington Senators Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians) Harry Hinchman (one season with Cleveland) Grover Land (7 seasons with Celeveland the the Brooklyn Tip-Tops) Frank Owen (8 years with the Tigers and White Sox) Denny Sullivan (4 years with Cleveland Boston Americans and Washington) Hi West (two seasons with Cleveland) Earl Yingling (five years with Vleveland Brooklyn Cincinnati and Washington) and Guy Zinn (five years with the Yankees Braves and Terrapins). Most notable however is future Hall of Fame manager Joe McCarthy. McCarthy played fifteen seasons in the minors compiling a .261 lifetime batting average eventually becoming the Cubs manager in 1926 but never playing in the major leagues. Our research has been unable to uncover a photo of the 1910 Mud Hens with players identified and although Burns Abbott Hinchman and West are identified by pencil markings right on the postcard we are unable to positively identify any of the other players (besides McCarthy of course back row sixth from left).Graded POOR 10 by SGC due to the aforementioned markings the card presents far better than the assigned grade with general corner wear but strong image quality. Postally unused the pencil markings have the effect not of downgrading the card"s condition but of helping to identify its subjects. An outstanding example of a minor league team photo/postcard with an inordinate number of future major leaguers including one future Hall of Fame managerial great.Population DataSGC Population: 1 total graded 1 at this level 0 higherPSA Population: 0 graded
