A common turn-of-the-century stadium souvenir was the handheld "fan " given or sold to patrons as a method of helping spectators keep cool in the hot summer sun. Fans were often decorated with elaborate images and photos of players many contained scorecards and often included advertisements for local businesses.Presented is one of the more interesting attractive and unique such fans that we have encountered. Featuring caricatures of an "all-star" assortment of players (with real-photo faces) and even umpires this fan appears like a "who"s who" of deadball era baseball including Hall of Famers Ty Cobb Honus Wagner Christy Mathewson Walter Johnson Nap Lajoie Tris Speaker Eddie Collins Johnny Evers Bobby Wallace and Roger Bresnahan along with several other stars of the day.Shaped like a baseball field the players are positioned at their normal defensive positions with Lajoie at bat facing Matty on the mound home and away scorecards integrated into the diamond. The back of the piece is blank with no printed advertisements and the handle is still attached. Although the piece does suffer from general wear and some mild discoloration it remains in outstanding condition grading out at a VG to VG/EX level. Measuring approximately 10" x 9" the fan was large enough to keep a spectator cool and depict all the stars of the era.A unique and highly desirable collectible containing the images of many of the greatest players ever to take the field.
