Superb full color premium measuring just under 7 1/2" x 11" and featuring Hall of Famer Rube Waddell as a member of the California League's Los Angeles Looloos a team with which he signed after a barnstorming trip in late 1901. Waddell remained in Los Angeles for just a few months before Connie Mack encouraged Waddell to join the Philadelphia Athletics. During his time in Los Angeles he compiled an 11-8 record with a 2.42 earned run average in 167 innings. A similar image to his CAN BE seen in the pages of Seymour Church's Base Ball 1845-1871. Despite the fact that this was clearly issued as a premium (copy on the bottom of the piece reads "Price of this picture is 5 cents per copy and is published by S. R. Church 307 Sansome Street San Francisco who sells those Fresh Snowballs the kind that do not melt and Pig Iron hard and soft.") this is the only example we have encountered in the hobby. The image is a colorized photo (credited to "Thors") printed on heavy paper - thicker than typical photo paper but thinner than cardboard. While the piece does exhibit some wrinkles and minor creasing in spots along with surface edge and corner wear the overall presentation is extremely strong. Rube Waddell is one of the most popular and widely-collected deadball era figures. He has been featured on a number of cards cabinets and premiums that depict him with the Athletics and the Browns. His brief stay in Los Angeles however is not well-documented as far as memorabilia is concerned. While we hesitant to make declarations about individual pieces being the only one in existence this is the only example of this premium that we have encountered in our research. A simply wonderful piece possibly unique featuring one of the game's most colorful and talented players.
