The habit of early collectors of mounting their cards in scrapbook albums using glue as an adhesive is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because such scrapbooks obviously protected cards from excessive wear; virtually any prewar card one encounters that still has sharp corners and little surface wear can be suspected of having spent at least some of its life mounted in a scrapbook. That same protection also serves as a curse however because subsequent removal of the card from the scrapbook often resulted in paper loss on the reverse which reduces the numeric grade of an otherwise gorgeous card to the lowest digits.Such is the case with this Walter Johnson a beautiful example of his E121 (Series of 80) American Caramel card. Carefully mounted with five little glue spots in a 1920s scrapbook The Big Train maintained his youthful looks and sharp edges for years until whenever the card was removed. Said removal of course produced five spots of paper loss on the reverse each of which contributed in its own small way to the grade of FAIR 20 by SGC. Aside from the five spots however this is easily an EX/MT card with four square corners and a slight tilt to the image. Any card depicting Walter Johnson at the end of his classic sidearm delivery is an interesting one to us and this is no exception. A beautiful card of one of the game"s greatest players.Population DataSGC Population: 34 total graded 1 at this level 30 higherPSA Population: 20 total graded 0 at this level 18 higher
