By 1954 Charlie Young was beginning to take better care of his baseball cards though he did still occasionally write on the reverses and was not quite focused on corner wear yet. Still as part of a complete 1940s and 1950s Bowman run the 1954 set remains an attractive one though a mixed-condition set. The primary condition flaws are related to corner wear and slight pencil markings on the reverse certainly a flaw that decreases the technical grade of a card dramatically yet does not impact eye appeal. Such flaws are common within this issue usually a blue pencil "check mark" on the reverse. A condition breakdown would be 6% EX or slightly better 23% VG/EX 28% VG 38% FAIR and 5% POOR with the bulk of the FAIR cards so graded due to the aforementioned pencil markings. We took the liberty of submitting three key cards to the set to PSA for grading. The results were #65 Mantle PSA VG-EX+ 4.5 #66 Williams PSA VG 3 and #89 Mays PSA VG+ 3.5. Other key cards grade as follows: #1 Rizzuto (F creasing and pencil mark) #6 Fox (EX) #15 Ashburn (F pencil mark on reverse otherwise VG/EX); #38 Minoso (VG) #45 Kiner (EX) #50 Kell (VG/EX) #57 Wilhelm (F pencil mark on reverse otherwise VG) #58 Reese (VG/EX) #62 Slaughter (VG) #64 Mathews (F pencil mark on reverse otherwise EX) #84 Doby (VG/EX) #90 Campanella (VG/EX) #95 Roberts (VG/EX) #110 Schoendienst (F pencil mark on reverse otherwise VG) #161 Berra (F pencil mark on reverse and crease) #164 Wynn (VG) #170 Snider (VG) #177 Ford (F pencil mark on reverse otherwise VG) #196 Lemon (POOR). An attractive collector-grade complete 1954 Bowman set from the "Texas Find." 224 cards total.
