Connecticut politician Morgan Bulkeley was the first president of the National League in 1876, and as a result is in the Hall of Fame.  A reluctant president, he stepped down after just one year.  Though he continued his political career, his baseball career was over until 1905, when he was named to the Mills Commission, the dubious group that promoted the inaccurate idea that Abner Doubleday was responsible for the invention of baseball.  He went on to become the president of Aetna, developing their programs for health insurance, automobile insurance and more. This letter, on Connecticut state letterhead, is dated 1892, and is a simple response to an autograph request.  In outstanding condition, the ink is somewhat faded, with the remnants of a long-ago vertical fold down the center.  Despite his brief tenure in the game, Bulkeley letters are not easy to find, and quite desirable among advanced Hall of Fame autograph collectors.
