We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set - the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor quality control in the era which resulted in considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to chipping and wear.

The example offered here is card #320, Warren Spahn, graded NM-MT 8. 1963 was the last great year for Warren Spahn in his Hall of Fame career. The lefty led the league in shutouts for the 7th consecutive season and 9th time overall, was named to his final All Star Game, and finished 12th in MVP voting. He won a career-high 23 games for the Milwaukee Braves, making it the 13th and final time he won 20 or more in a season.

His 1963 Topps card shows the confident southpaw in the twilight of his greatness, smiling as he readies a ball to be thrown. Nice top corners and strong edges with good centering. Two bottom corners fall victim to the color loss issues often seen on the red bottom borders in the set. The card's technical grade is mostly explained by a near cut down the right side, just inside the east border. It's as if the sheet was aligned to be cut improperly, and saved at the last minute. Nevertheless, this one has plenty of eye appeal.

Only 16 of the more than 1,100 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the NM-MT 8 offered here.
