We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set - the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor quality control in the era which resulted in considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to chipping and wear.

The example offered here is card #173, Bombers' Best, graded NM-MT 8.The card features 1962 Rookie of the Year Tom Tresh, second baseman Bobby Richardson who led the Major Leagues in hits and finished 2nd in MVP voting in 1962, and the great Mickey Mantle who won the 1962 MVP. The Yankees won the 1962 World Series, and were heavy favorites to win it again in 1963, which may be why the three teammates are all smiles on the front of this wonderful card.

The corners are sharp and the edges are strong on this one. Some extremely faint diamond cutting is present, but the image is nicely centered otherwise. Light snow especially in the green bottom border, and minor edge chipping in the same area keep this card from grading higher than it already has.

Only 17 out of the nearly 4,500 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the NM-MT 8 offered here.
