There are three different Red Ames cards included in the T206
set. This version,
featuring a bright blue and green background with an action shot of Ames at the top of his windup with both hands above his head, is the most common. The colors remain vibrant after 115 years, but a crease toward the upper right corner, some rounded corners, and some light staining explain the technical grade. PSA has
only ever graded 28 total
examples of this Old Mill back version of the Ames,
with
only thirteen receiving a
higher grade than the VG+ 3.5 offered here.
Leon Kessling "Red" Ames was the Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn of his day. From 1905 to 1907, Ames led the league in Strikeouts Per 9 Innings. However, in two of those years, he also led the Majors in wild pitches, with 30 in 1905, and 20 in 1907. Although he was predominantly a starting pitcher, Ames also led MLB in saves on two separate occasions (1914 and 1916).
