There are three different Hughie Jennings cards included in the T206
set. This version, which is a portrait
of the Hall of Fame infielder, is the
rarest of
the three. Jennings' red hair and rosy cheeks match the yellow and orange gradient background perfectly, lending tons of color to offset his gray Detroit uniform. Soft, rounded corners are consistent with the grade on this offering, whose centering is slightly south and east on the canvas. The text under the portrait "JENNINGS, DETROIT" was nearly cut at the factory, but has seemed to just make the card in its entirety. However, the bottom bits of the text from the card above it on the sheet have made its way on to the top of this example.
Some very faint foxing is present on the front, along with light tobacco staining on the card's otherwise gorgeous Piedmont back, further explaining the technical grade. PSA has
only ever graded 99 total examples of this Piedmont 150 back version of
the
Ganley, with
only twenty-four receiving a
higher grade than the VG 3 offered here.
Many know Jennings for his
colorful antics, hoots, whistles, and his famous shouts of "Ee-Yah!"
from the third base coaching box. Few realize that Jennings is a Hall of
Fame player who led the Majors in WAR for four consecutive years, led
the Majors in HBP for five consecutive years, and holds the all-time
Major League record in the category.
