Yankees submarine pitcher Carl Mays and Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman will forever be associated with one of the single most tragic incidents in baseball history. On August 16, 1920 at the Polo Grounds in New York, Mays struck Chapman on the temple with a fastball, an injury from which Chapman did not recover. To this day Chapman remains the only player to succumb to injuries suffered during play. Two oversized photos featuring Ray Chapman are included with the presented collection, along with three photos of Carl Mays. Two of the Mays photos hail from his time with the Red Sox, with one photo included featuring Mays in Yankees pinstripes. Condition issues common to working press photos are scattered throughout the group, including chipped borders, editorial markings, and pencil notations on verso. Five photos total.
