While Fred McMullin was implicated in the scheme to "fix" the 1919 World Series, details as to his exact involvement remain murky. By some accounts McMullin was an instigator of the "fix" and by others he simply overhead the details and wanted in. Either way, vintage photos of the Chicago "Black Sox" utility man are scarce and highly desirable, while those originating from the lens of Charles Martin Conlon are virtually non-existent. In-fact, the presented photograph happens to be the only full-body fielding pose of McMullin that we're aware of to be attributed to Mr. Conlon. Likely captured at the Polo Grounds, as Conlon was a New York-based photographer, McMullin is depicted in a wide shot while a teammate looks on. Photo remains in beautiful overall condition with two small pieces of tape at top edge of verso where a handwritten identifier of McMullin also appears at center. Authenticated as a Type 2 photo by PSA/DNA.
