Yankees all-time great, Lou Gehrig strikes a classic fielding pose in this outstanding 8" x 10" news service photograph. A baby-faced Gehrig is shown sporting his D&M first baseman's glove while reaching for an imaginary baseball during the summer of 1923. Not only did this image serve as the source material for Gehrig's 1929 R315 card but gettyimages.com attributes it to June 5, 1923, indicating the image was shot exactly ten days prior to Gehrig's major league debut on June 15. While it remains a vintage 1950's example and has been developed from the original negative, this example has been encapsulated as a Type 2 photo by PSA/DNA, indicating it was created more than two years after the image was shot. Surface of photo remains clean and bright, with a hint of rounding to the corners. Verson is largely blank aside from small handwritten notations at top, a strip of tape residue along the bottom and a small blue dot that appears to be a sticker in the lower-right corner. Easily one of Gehrig's most iconic images.
