A brightly burning star, Bob Caruthers was a well known pitcher who twice won 40 games in the old American Association, the first league to directly compete against the National League. Over a ten year period of 1882-1891, the AA champion faced off against the NL champion 7 seven times, with Caruthers competing in four of those clashes. He pitched a staggering 8 games in the 15 game 1887 tilt, going 4-4 as Chris von der Ahe's St. Louis Brown Stockings lost to the Detroit Wolverines.

This is the 71-2 pose of Caruthers in the N172 Old Judge set, depicting him with the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, where he ended up after his contract was sold by an irate van der Ahe, who blamed the pitcher for the lsos to Detroit. It's seen some water contact that's happily stayed away from the central image of the hurler.  An SGC 5, this is the highest graded example of this pose in the SGC population report.
