George Herman Ruth glides across home plate during Game 5 of the 1923 World Series in this 7" x 9" original news service photo from Underwood. The Babe is pictured scoring in the second inning at Yankee Stadium, making the score 7-1 in favor of the Yankees, as Giants catcher Hank Gowdy tumbles and future Hall of Fame umpire Billy Evans makes the call. The Yankees third try would indeed prove to be the charm as they had lost the two previous World Series to the Giants but would merge victorious in 1923, besting their Subway Series rivals over six games. This remains the only time in baseball history that the same two clubs have faced each other in three consecutive World Series. Sepia toned photo is a beautiful piece of fast action photography with the central image of the play at the plate slightly tilted within the white borders. Typical light corner wear is present, with verso displaying light tonight and a large paper caption over Underwood stamping just peeking out from underneath. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
