Opening Day 1929 at Yankee Stadium gave the home crowd their first look at new Yankees uniforms, emblazoned with numbers on their backs for the very first time. Unlike today, these numbers corresponded to each player's place in the lineup, with Lou Gehrig sporting number three and Babe Ruth following him in the order while donning number four. The presented photograph depicts the on deck hitter, Lou Gehrig greeting Babe Ruth at home plate after launching a solo home run in the first inning during his very first AB of the 1929 season. While the presented photo has been developed from the original negative sometime during the 1930's, PSA has determined it to be just outside of their two-year window for Type 1 authentication. Thus, this photo remains a Type 2 example, vintage to the era. Unquestionably, this image has been tightly cropped from a much wider shot which has impacted the overall sharpness. Print itself remains highly presentable despite a a fuzzy lower-right corner and paper remnants appear in the corners of verso where photo had been affixed to a paper album page. Verso also displays large International stamping along with handwritten notations along the top edge. Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA as a Type 2 photo.
