1952 Topps high numbers remain the creme-de-la-creme of the postwar hobby.  Joe Black was a hard throwing starter in the Negro National League, toiling for the Baltimore Elite Giants over a half dozen seasons from 1943-50, with some time out for military service. Like many so many players of color barred from Organized Baseball at the time, he also played extensively in the Caribbean and South American Winter Leagues and perfected his repertoire. His contract was purchased by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951 and he attended Spring Training in 1952 and was Jackie Robinson's roommate in Vero Beach. He made the team as a reliever, aged 28, and was a key member of the 1952 "Boys of Summer" squad, earning NL Rookie of the Year Honors over Hoyt Wilhelm as a result, while finished 3rd in the MVP voting.  He pitched valiantly in that year's World Series as well as an emergency starter.

Unfortunately 1952 was the zenith of his pro career and he would start a slow slide in 1953, brought about by injury, that saw him conclude his pro ball experience in 1957 after several trades and sporadic demotions. He eventually became an executive with Greyhound and wrote a syndicated magazine and newspaper column for many years.

Topps captured him during his stellar 1952 campaign, and his high number card remains popular.  This SGC 5.5 has typical centering for the series with strong color and excellent composition prominent.  The centering appears to be the biggest detriment to the grader's eyes.
