After 2130 consecutive games played, a streak that began in June of 1925, Lou Gehrig asked then-Yankees manager Joe McCarthy to bench him "for the good of the team." Gehrig sat the bench for the first time in 14 years on May 2, 1939 – the very day this image was captured. An iconic and important photograph of "The Iron Horse," this fresh example to the hobby includes a full paper caption detailing the circumstances. Photo surface presents wonderfully with only a tiny crease visible to the naked eye in the lower-right corner and a small piece of the upper-left corner is missing. A spot of paper residue is present in the upper-left corner of verso and large International News stamping is obscured by the included paper caption. Measures 6.5" x 8.5". Encapsulated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
