This ticket stub is one of a complete run of stubs from every New York Yankees/Brooklyn Dodgers World Series game being offered in this auction.  We invite you to view our printed catalog or visit our e-book catalog online at https://online.flippingbook.com/view/961320424/ to read an excellent article on the crosstown rivalry written by SABR president Mark Armour.

Game 6 was a must win for Brooklyn as the Series moved back to Yankee Stadium with the Yankees up, 3-2.  It would wind up being one of the most famous of all the Yankees/Dodgers World Series games.

The Dodgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, adding two more in the third inning.  The Yankees responded with a 4-run third, and added another in the bottom of the fourth.  Trailing 5-4, the Dodgers broke through with a big rally in the 6th, scoring four runs off Joe Page and Bobo Newsom to take an 8-5 lead.  In the bottom of the inning, the Dodgers brought in Joe Hate to pitch, moved Cookie Lavagetto to third, and sent Al Gionfriddo to left field as a defensive replacement.  Hate retired two of the first three batters he faced, sandwiching a Snuffy Stirnweiss walk between two outs.  Yogi Berra then singled to left, bringing the tying run to the plate in Joe DiMaggio.

DiMaggio drove the ball to deep left, but Gionfriddo raced to the line and tracked the ball down, snagging the fly ball in deep left.  The play prompted Red Barber's famous "back, back, back, back" call, and also resulted in one of the only occasions in which Joe DiMaggio was shown visibly upset, as he kicked the dirt around second base.

Much like Lavagetto's famous pinch hit was the final hit of his career, Gionfriddo's catch was the final putout of his major league career, forcing a decisive 7th game and forever going into Dodgers lore.

Despite presenting very well, the stub has earned a grade of GOOD 2 due to a series of spider wrinkles visible under bright light, predominantly near the Yankees logo at the top of the stub.
