The struggle for supremacy in the dog-eat-dog world of wieners was so fierce in the 1950's that Old Homestead, an Iowa meatpacking company, issued a set of 21 players toiling for the Class-A Western League's Des Moines Bruins to bring attention to their franks and other products. The set is rare/borderline impossible, with 73 in total graded by PSA and a sole example showing up on the SGC pop report. The black bottom panel that extends to the bottom of the card is a key culprit in the grading clustering around VG-EX and lower for most examples.
Dwight Stoddard, somehow identified here as Jim despite his middle name being Leland, is a bit of a mystery man. He started his career in 1951 with the Class-C Clovis Pioneers then seems to have been drafted as he doesn't reappear until 1954, where he came on like a house afire, winning 17 games for the Class-C Magic Valley Cowboys of the Pioneer League. That got him to the PCL for a short stint in 1955 before he fell back to A Ball. with Des Moines and ended up on his sole baseball card. There are 4 Old Homestead Stoddard's graded by PSA, and this is the sole 6, with none higher. In addition to the bottom black border, Stoddard features a gray background, which is in very nice shape here. In fact, the card looks great overall, with some centering toward the bottom bringing the grade down.
