Pitcher Ernie Shore spent parts of seven seasons in the major leagues, winning 19 games with the World Champion 1915 Red Sox and starting two games of the 1915 World Series, instead of teammate Babe Ruth.  Shore pitched an ignominious perfect game, as Babe Ruth started the game and walked the first batter, charging umpire Brick Owens and hitting him.  Manager Jack Barry replaced Ruth with Shore, the baserunner caught stealing for the first out - and then Shore retired the next 26 batters.

Presented here is a collection of paper ephemera once belonging to Shore.  The collection includes: 1) Portrait Photo: 6 7/8" x 9 3/4" sepia photo.  Strong eye appeal with some foxing and staining, a few corner creases, and some markings on the reverse.  2) 1912 Letter: Letter from Shore to his parents, mailed in a Guilford College envelope.  In the letter, Shore is writing his parents to ask them for some money so that he could buy some underwear.  Really.  3) 1952 Ernie Shore Night Program: Official program from Southside Baseball Park in Winston-Salem, home park of the Winston-Salem Cardinals of the Carolina League, dated May 12, 1952.  They played a game against the Greensboro Patriots.  Though no major leaguers of note played in the game, the teams did honor Shore, who by then was sheriff of Forsyth County.  VG condition.  The collection also comes with a small modern print picturing members of the 1916 Red Sox, including Shore and Ruth.  Three items total, plus the print.
