Superb 6.5" x 8.5" photo of diminutive Hall of Fame catcher, Ray Schalk tossing at the Polo Grounds. Schalk is sporting the unmistakeable dark away uniform of the mid-teens Chicago White Sox (1914 was the only season a white "W" appeared on the collar). Schalk caught all six games of the 1917 World Series defeating the Giants four games to two but is most remembered as a member of the 1919 White Sox team implicated in throwing the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. Schalk was not involved in the fix, batting .308 while catching all nine games of the series. His dark uniform appears in beautiful contrast to the background of this photo, framed nicely by the bright white border which is missing the lower right corner. A large Paul Thompson stamp appears on verso which is surprisingly clean aside from what appears to be a fingerprint and a small piece of tape residue. Photo is fresh to the hobby, originating from the archives of Photo File, Inc. where it has been stored for several decades until this offering. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
