Fan-favorite Don Zimmer is perhaps most remembered today for his time as bench coach with Joe Torre's New York Yankees from 1996-2003. While many associate "Zim" with an incident involving Pedro Martinez during the 2003 ALCS, Zimmer's career spanned 60+ years in professional baseball as a player, manager and coach, getting his start with a Dodgers Class D farm team in 1949. Here, Zimmer has been photographed with the St. Paul Saints of the American Association, sometime in 1953 and shortly before being called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers on July 2, 1954. Incredibly, 3 months after this photo taken Zimmer was famously beaned by a pitch and remained unconscious for the next 10 consecutive days. Photo measures 8" x 10" and features exceptional clarity and tonal contrast. An exemplary portrait of "Zim." Verso exhibits just the slightest hint of toning and includes an April 15, 1953 date stamp along with stampings from photographer Jim Harlan and the Courier-Journal. Photo is fresh to the hobby and originates from the archives of Photo File, Inc. where it has been stored for several decades until this offering. Guaranteed Type 1.
