Late 19th and early 20th Century pencil boxes are quite desirable among memorabilia collectors, and we have handled quite a few over the years.  This example is one we've never seen before, with a more detailed design picturing a ballplayer poised to swing a bat in the center of the case, flaked by "action" illustrations of game play.  The three images are surrounded by stylized borders.  The case does exhibit quite a bit of wear, with surface abrasions having removed some of the color of the piece, and some gouges in the wood and overall fading also evident.  The inside shows pencil markings throughout, of course, the lock long missing its key.  Still, an excellent piece of early baseball memorabilia with significant display value.
